LOCAL SCHOOL ANNOUNCES YEAR-ROUND ACADEMIC CALENDAR FOR FIRST THROUGH TWELFTH GRADE
Kitty Hawk, NC -- Heron Pond Montessori School announced that they will offer an optional year round calendar beginning in the 2020-2021 school year for students enrolled in elementary and secondary programs. This progressive calendar provides students with the opportunity for enrichment throughout the entire year. Vacations are scheduled periodically throughout the year rather than all together during the summer months.
Heron Pond Montessori School’s founder, Ms. Sallie Ackley, opened the school more than 25 years ago. In a continued effort to keep ahead of educational trends, she hopes that the Outer Banks community will welcome the opportunity for the school calendar to more appropriately reflect the lifestyle of families.
Ms. Ackley recently completed a survey of students, their families, and staff. “Across the board, everyone expressed interest in pursuing this schedule. That demand coupled with recent studies demonstrating the academic and social growth of students enrolled in year-round programs made this an easy decision,” Ms. Ackley affirms. “Further, supporting the Heron Pond family is a priority. My goals are to strengthen all aspects of our community in support of our students.”
Traditional school calendars were designed during a period when families needed their children at home during the summer to help with farm chores. The goal of the new calendar remains the same: creating a school calendar that appropriately blends with the needs of home. As our society has progressed, so should our schools. A year-round calendar more aptly mirrors the lifestyle of families in the Outer Banks.
Parents are also excited by this news. Allison Dorbad, a parent of two elementary students, explained, “I think it’s wonderful. The new schedule will allow us to travel in the winter and keep the kids engaged and learning in the summer. They love Heron Pond and it would be hard for them to be away for an extended summer vacation.”
With smaller class sizes, the schedule allows for greater times outside during all months. Typically, an hour or more is spent on the playground beneath a grove of live oaks and exploring the wetlands behind the school. Spontaneous fishing lessons, soccer games, and wildlife study occur daily. Students work together to create games and build structures.
A Montessori curriculum is designed to guide each student on their individual path of learning. Extending the calendar over 12 months will afford a more complete school experience for all of them.
Heron Pond Montessori School occupies four campuses from Southern Shores to Nags Head and serves children beginning at age 1 through their high school experience. To schedule a tour or observation call 252-261-7891. New student enrollment will begin March 2020 for the 2020-2021 school year.
